La Comedia Holiday Celebration
The older I get the reasons to get excited over Christmas change, rather than presents its now more about enjoying the holiday traditions. Just like hanging the favorite ornaments on the tree an event that I cherish every year is attending the Christmas show at La Comedia, which this year is 'Holiday Celebration.'
In all honesty, (I can't lie because Santa is watching) I begin looking forward to La Comedia's traditional singing of 'O Holy Night' around June. I don't need Miley Cyrus on a wrecking ball to fulfill my music wish list, just Dustin Farris all alone with his powerful voice belting out the hymn.
Farris has performed 'O Holy Night' the last few years and continues to give a gift that I remember more than anything I've unwrapped.
There's plenty more to enjoy before 'O Holy Night' closes the show, including many more favorite Christmas carols. The first act of 'Holiday Celebration' revolves around Santa (Blake Cox) taking four siblings to his workshop in order to prove his existence to them. Santa brings a variety of toys to life in an attempt to impress the children. The youngest, Virginia (doesn't it always seem to be Virginia's who write to Santa?), believes but the others are tough to convince.
The magic in the workshop results in some extremely graceful ballerinas, dancing rag dolls, and real life marching toy soldiers. Plus, there's also a hippopotamus. Who doesn't want a hippopotamus for Christmas? Children of all ages, young and old will enjoy visiting the North Pole. The elves, provide some comic relief, especially with their surprise song to conclude the first act.
The second act consists of the nativity, and is a moving portrayal of the true reason for the season. Very spiritual, it's almost just like being at church but without an offering plate getting passed around. In voices reminiscent of Angels a collection of gospel hymns are sang such as 'O Come All Ye Faithful,' 'Away In A Manger,' 'What Child Is This,' and 'Joy To The World."
In covering both the commercial side and the true meaning of Christmas, 'Holiday Celebration' is all wrapped up into a show that will put you in the spirit of the season. I don't know what gifts await me this year, but I'll be satisfied because I've already heard 'O Holy Night' at La Comedia.
