In the world of musicals, Rodgers and Hammerstein are equivalent to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream as both sets of names guarantee greatness and complete satisfaction. They each create products with lots of flavor, not just plain vanilla, which are tasty and always leaves you wanting more. One of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved creations is “South Pacific” which is being served at La Comedia through May 3.
The score written by the famous duo features songs like “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” and “There’s Nothing Like A Dame.” It takes quality voices to give life to such songs and the talented cast certainly delivers. Their talent can’t be contained within a pint or even by the gallon.
Mr. Dependable a.k.a, Chris Kramer excels in every role he plays, and makes no exception as Emile De Becque. His counterpart, Elizabeth Doyle, in her La Comedia debut, is also perfect as Nellie Forbush. Together their voices are as bright as a tropical island, like somewhere in the “South Pacific.” Their performances take you away on an enchanted adventure that you won’t soon forget.
Set in World War II, ‘South Pacific’ is an unconventional love story as realities of the war and prejudices of the time threaten the burgeoning romances. The other central couple is Lt. Joseph Cable (Kevin Bianchi) and Liat (Tomoe Takada) who are separated by different nationalities. The only language they share, is love.
“South Pacific” inhabits many strong supporting players, led by Brent Alan Burington as Luther Billis. His accent and mannerisms are perfect reflections of a rebellious sailor. He provides some comic relief and even manages to pull off wearing a coconut bikini. Another scene stealer is Ava Anise Adams as Bloody Mary, who has more of a bite than the drink. Special mention should also go to Chuckie Dixon as the Professor whose part is small, but he adds enough personality to make it stand-out. All three cast members mentioned above are making their La Comedia debuts.
The scenery is also especially superb, in ‘South Pacific’ making you feel as if you are on a tropical island.
‘South Pacific’ continues through May 3.
Considered by many to be the finest musical ever written, the score includes such classics as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame" and "A Wonderful Guy." The original Broadway production enjoyed immense critical and box-office success, became the second-longest running Broadway musical to that point (behind Rodgers and Hammerstein's earlier Oklahoma!), and has remained popular ever since.
