Below is a list of the five most critical, along with a few reasons why you may need to "upgrade".
- Bye, bye, Windows XP. If you haven't heard, Microsoft will discontinue all support for Windows XP in April 2014. Techno-wise, XP is getting very old and Microsoft provides products with 10 years of support. Yes, it will still work after that but nobody will be writing any new apps for it. Times up, the clock is ticking…
- So long Office 2003. With Microsoft's big push away from Microsoft XP comes the end of support for Office 2003 too. Plan that move to Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013 soon. Compatibility with your colleagues will eventually be an issue.
- A little reprieve for Windows Server and Small Business Server 2003. While these business servers are coupled to Windows XP, Microsoft has extended these through July 2015. Plan to update your server or move to the cloud.
- Exchange 2003 lives on… for a while. Microsoft has no plans to discontinue support of this version of its business email, calendaring, and contact database software at this time. Microsoft's general rule of thumb is that support stretches back two previous versions and Exchange 2003 is now number 2.
- Windows Vista continues. Anyone using Windows Vista is safe since they're not part of the 37% of current PC users still using Windows XP. Support for Vista will continue for some time.
