The Humane Society of Greater Dayton has rescued 15 adult beagles from a mass-breeding facility riddled with animal welfare concerns. The beagles were part of a group of approximately 4,000 beagles housed at an Envigo RMS LLC facility in Cumberland, Virginia which bred dogs to be sold to laboratories for animal experimentation.

“We love how many people have voiced an interest in helping or adopting these beagles,” said Brian Weltge, President and CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. “We know they are going to get adopted quickly. We have a limited number and ask that those interested please be patient with us. We also encourage those who aren’t able to adopt one of these beagles to look at some of the other amazing dogs we have at our shelter who are also waiting for homes as well.”

How to adopt

Currently, the beagles are being examined by our veterinary team and are receiving all of the proper care they need before they are officially available for adoption. This includes getting each one spayed or neutered, microchipping them, updating their vaccinations and more. Most will hopefully be ready for adoption this Saturday, September 3rd at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s main shelter, 1661 Nicholas Road in Dayton.  Stay tuned to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s Facebook page for more details.

How you can help

If you want to help, but can’t adopt at this time, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton ask you to consider fostering. Foster families are needed to temporarily house animals, which helps free up cage space for more animals, and ultimately find more animals forever homes. You can fill out a foster application now at www.hsdayton.org/foster. You can also make a donation at www.hsdayton.org/donate to help support the Humane Society of Greater Dayton in their mission of ensuring all animals are safe and free from suffering.
