Dayton Bike Share Sees Increase in Winter Trips
Warmer temperatures this winter have had a positive impact on Link: Dayton Bike Share ridership. Trips for January and February are up a combined 37% from the previous winter. The number of unique users increased by 25% from 293 users to 392 users. The nonprofit just wrapped up its Winter Warrior Challenge II sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Co last Friday.
This year’s program ran from December 2, 2016 to February 24, 2017. “The goal of the program is to encourage riders to stay active throughout the winter by replacing everyday errands on a Link Bike or just riding for recreation,” says Chris Buck of Bike Miami Valley. “This winter we had a joke going around the office that we should have named the competition our Spring Warrior Challenge.”
The second year of the program attracted more than 50 participants who took a combined total of 4,049 trips over the three month period – a 34% increase over last year’s trip numbers. The top warrior, Victor Roberts, finished with a personal total of 1,112 trips – a new system record! Roberts took home the top prize of a cruiser bike designed and donated by the program sponsor, New Belgium Brewing Co. Winter Warriors had the opportunity to win other prizes throughout the challenge from local businesses such as: Ghostlight Coffee, Boston Stoker Coffee, Basil’s, Old Scratch Pizza and the 2nd Street Market.
“My friends and I probably would have stayed in all winter, but instead this challenge got us out riding and having fun. It was awesome. We can’t wait for the next challenge,” said Winter Warrior participant, Alexandra Stepanenko.
