The Lost Dogs In Concert at Joe's Java
The Lost Dogs are a supergroup made up of four of the most talented singers, songwriters, musicians and storytellers in America. Separately, as frontmen for their own bands, Terry Scott Taylor (Daniel Amos), Michael Roe (The '77s), Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong (both from The Choir) have everything from multiple award winning albums to Grammy nominations to television and video game soundtracks to their credit. Together, they are one of the most respected collaboration of artists by industry insiders, critics and a growing number of savvy fans around the world. They have shared the bill with George Jones, Dierks Bentley, Delbert McClinton and Weird Al among others.
They are the modern day equivalent of great American singer/songwriter supergroups like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Highwaymen and The Traveling Wilburys. Yet, the majority of people reading this article have never heard of them.
The Lost Dogs are a band trapped in a purgatorial genre. They are too "spiritual" to be played on most secular radio stations and not spiritual enough to be played on most religious radio stations. This unfortunate label has been the death knell to many talented bands.
Some bands like U2 and (more recently) Skillet have managed to escape the barren wasteland. Most of the members of U2 started out in a Christian group called Shalom. They have never attempted to hide their faith and it has influenced their music. Their Christian faith and struggles with it can clearly be heard in songs like "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Gloria" and "40'. The band has transcended the music industry to become pop culture icons.
More recently, the band Skillet has found monumental success in the mainstream market. Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys and Skillet were the only bands to sell over one million records in 2012. Yet, for every band that successfully walks the line between being exclusively a religious band and a secular band, there are thousands of other bands that get shunned by both sides of the music industry. The Lost Dogs are the best of the best who never found a home.
It is hard to define the music of The Lost Dogs in any one genre. The have been described as Roots Rock, Americana, and Alternative Country. You are likely to hear a song that moves you to contemplate the meaning of life at a Lost Dog's performance, but you are just as likely to hear a silly song that makes you laugh out loud. While their personal faith is a part of their music, it isn't the sole defining theme of it. From songs about Route 66 to songs about the life of a coal mining family; their music is about the American experience.
The Lost Dogs will be performing Sunday, July 28th at Joe's Java in Wilmington, Ohio. Tickets are $10 at the door. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear one of the most underrated bands in the nation.
