Mark your calendars for a once-in-a-lifetime show just one year from now: On April 8, 2024, Dayton will experience a total solar eclipse.
During the eclipse, the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the sun's light. During the eclipse, the moon will completely block out the sun, casting a shadow on the Earth. The sky will go dark and you will be able to see the sun's corona, the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere.
Unlike the Great American Eclipse in 2017, Dayton and the Miami Valley will be in the path of totality, crossing the state from southwest to northeast.
The partial solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 will begin at 1:53 p.m., with totality beginning at 3:09 p.m., and lasting a little more than two minutes.
The last total solar eclipse visible in Ohio was in 1806. The next total solar eclipse in Ohio will be in 2099, so this truly will be a once-in-a-lifetime show.
Special solar eclipse glasses are recommended for this amazing event, though it's important to never look directly at the sun, even during a solar eclipse.
