Dayton Metro Library Brings Black History Month Alive with Art Exhibits
Beginning Saturday, January 29, the Dayton Metro Library will host multiple art exhibits in honor of Black History Month:
The Artist’s Life (presented by the African American Visual Artists Guild)
On display Tuesday, February 1 – Saturday, March 26, Main Library, Third Street Bridge
The Artist’s Life exhibit consists of 27 pieces of art from 19 different artists that demonstrates something personal of themselves and reflects development on their artistic path, a meaningful event, or the artistic skills they possess.
“Learning about the artist and his or her process in making art makes this exhibit interesting,” AAVAG artist Andrea Cummings said. “The target audience is all ages of artists, art lovers, art buyers, and people interested in art.”
Patrons who are interested in meeting the artists whose work is displayed in this exhibit can attend The Artist’s Life Art Exhibit Reception on Saturday, February 12, from 1 - 3 pm at the Main Library, in the Community Room. Light refreshments will be provided.
Three additional art exhibits for Black History Month include:
Saga: Creating a Legacy
On display Saturday, January 29 – Monday, February 28, Trotwood Branch Library
Patrons can build on their own legacy while exploring the work of Tony McCleskey, a native Daytonian and visual artist. This exhibit is inspired by the unsung and unrecognized African American legends and the decades of Black history that have been lost within the greater Dayton area.
Additionally, McCleskey will be at the Trotwood Branch Wednesday, February 2, from 1 - 3 pm, for a special meet and greet session with patrons.
On display Tuesday, February 1 – Monday, February 28, Northwest Branch Library
This freestanding exhibit celebrates the many facets of African American History.
Atlas of Dayton: A City in Progress
On display Monday, February 7 – Saturday, February 26, Southeast Branch Library
This travelling interactive exhibit educates viewers on issues of equity, opportunity, and resource access in Dayton. Atlas is an ongoing research project of University of Dayton Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Misty Thomas-Trout and is presented in partnership with the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and sponsored by the UD College of Arts & Sciences.
