Take Steps Toward A Healthier You
Already stumped with that New Year's Resolution to be more active? Wright State University and the Miami Valley Hospital are bringing back a popular program to help Dayton residents get out of that funk - one step at a time.
The Healthy Step program is an effort to help faculty, staff and students stay fit over the winter by walking regularly. This winter, the Wright State Nutter Center will open to walkers from 5 to 7 p.m. most Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of March. The arena concourse, a one-quarter-mile loop, is a "warm, safe and dryâ€Â place to stay active, said a WSU press release.
Participants will be given a pedometer at their first walk to keep track of their steps. They'll be encouraged to wear it each time they walk, and the individual with the most cumulative steps during the program will receive a prize. Weekly prizes will be available as well.
Misty Cox, marketing manager at the Nutter Center, said the event took place last winter, as well. According to a news release, people who participated took a combined 1.5 million steps.
That's not all - The Miami Valley Hospital will keep experts on hand periodically for health screenings like blood pressure checks and to hand out information.
It's easy to get started in an event like this, and you'll be surprised where it takes you. I made myself a commitment to be more active a few years ago. In September 2011 I started walking a quarter of a mile a day. One year later I had completed my first two half marathons. Not that that's where everybody goes with it, but you'd be amazed at how great it feels!
If you're interested, take a walk through Gate 5 of the Nutter Center at any time between 5 and 7 p.m. It's free and open to the public ages 18 and over. There isn't a speed requirement, either, so it's a great opportunity to get active with family members.
