Ohio ranks among top 15 fattest states in America
According to a new survey from WalletHub, Mississippi ranked the fattest state in 2017. The Buckeye state ranks 13th in the nation. WalletHub's analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 19 key metrics, including the share of obese and overweight population to sugary-beverage consumption and obesity-related health care costs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than seven in 10 U.S. adults aged 20 and older are either overweight or obese. The U.S. spends in total nearly $200 billion in annual health care costs related to obesity. Lack of physical activity is a leading cause of obesity, in addition to genetics, emotional instability and sleeplessness.
If you're curious, WalletHub also published a "Fattest Cities in America" list, earlier this year. The Dayton metro area ranked 47th.
There is some good news though. This very same website decided this past spring that Ohio was the 17th "Least Stressed State". Though before you relax, you should know that in September, WalletHub dealt the optimists amongst us another minor blow, when it ranked Ohio just 36th in their list of "Happiest States in America". Good job we know better.
However, back to the fattest states. It is important to remember there were 12 other states ranked above Ohio. So for complete context, here are the top 15 fattest states:
