I just went to Shish Wraps last week and a lot of people have been asking me my thoughts on this new Mediterranean Grille quick service restaurant. And I say it's worth visiting. Why?
Because it's tasty.
Because it's affordable.
Because how many times can you go to Chipotle in a week? (Wait. Don't answer that.)
Shish Wraps is located on Brown street in the same strip as Smashburger, Potbelly's and Fusian. It opened the end of February this year. I give the brothers that opened the restaurant props for their ambition to integrate Mediterranean food into the quick service restaurant business. It seems most Americans get a little freaked out by things they're not familiar with, so Shish Wraps keeps it simple. You'll recognize the format - it's similar to a Five Guys or Panera. Walk in, look up at the menu, and place your order.
While there's definitely some menu options that aren't as well known - it keeps it familiar enough for the picky eaters.
The menu features wraps or bowls. There are staples like a beef bowl, which my brother got, that includes onions, peppers, mushrooms and tahini sauce. I ordered the chicken wrap, which had cabbage mix, Mediterranean pickles, fries, and tahini sauce. That's right - french fries in the wrap! A little unusual, but still oh-so-yummy.
When I ate there, I was pleased with the customer service. The gentleman behind the counter was patient as my brother and I debated on what we wanted. Did we dare try falafel (chickpeas smashed up and spiced and then fried)? Or do we try the fries in the wrap? I chose the wrap since the fries seemed fun, and also got a side of chips and hummus.
The two entrees, an appetizer and two drinks was only $20. Definitely a reasonable price for two.
The wrap was larger than I anticipated, which made me happy. The bowl was a little smaller, so I say you get more bang for your buck with the wrap. The employee came over later to ask how our first experience with Shish Wraps went, and also commented that the wrap fuses the flavors better since they also grill it.
Now that I've tried some of the menu staples, I'm excited to return and build my own "shish". You can choose a wrap or bowl, choose your meat, toppings and sauce.
All in all, Shish Wraps is definitely a nice addition to the Brown Street strip, and I'm excited to see how people respond to it.
