Taking a stroll through historic Oakwood is always pleasant, whether you need groceries, new clothes, or even a rug. New restaurant Flyboy's Deli opened Friday as the newest business on the block, and it's definitely worth a stroll.

Taking a stroll through historic Oakwood is always pleasant, whether you need groceries, new clothes, or even a rug. New restaurant Flyboy's Deli opened Friday as the newest business on the block, and it's definitely worth a stroll.
The new deli specializes in soups, salads and sandwiches, so I had to sample what they offer. The classic deli favorite, the Reuben sandwich, apparently tops the menu in popularity and I had to give "The Liberty" Reuben a try. It's spectacular. The corned beef is texturally perfect, it's tender and piled high.
Often the thought of the sandwich conjures ideas of an overly-salty cold meat that can seem overprocessed; Flyboys masters the sandwich - it's true to the idea of the sandwich but tastes substantially better than your average sandwich. Add a little swiss cheese and sauerkraut and you've got a good sandwich.
I also sampled one of the appetizers, the "Staten Island" artichoke Dip, which is topped with tomatoes and parmesan cheese. It's a great taste to whet the appetite for two; you really appreciate the effort that goes into making this one - it's a great recipe for a fairly mild starter.
The menu is pretty extensive, particularly with so many sandwiches, fortunately there's an option for the healthy eater and the indecisive mind alike; half sandwiches along with a cup of soup for $7.50.
Flyboy's brings a little taste of New York cuisine to Dayton, and what better way to do so than by opening a restaurant you can walk to so easily? The concept is small business at its most charming. The people are exceptionally friendly, and it's the kind of place where I can easily see myself becoming a regular.
When you spot a new restaurant going up, it always piques your curiosity - a new eatery means a new flavor and another thread in the city's cultural identity. Particularly for downtown Oakwood, so close to the Gem City's center, it's great to see another business that reflects so well on Dayton's legacy.
