Flavors with a Californian flare... in Centerville
Dayton is full of little dining gems that are easy to miss; Flavors Eatery in Centerville is one of them.
Currently sitting in an almost empty shopping center on E. Franklin Road, Flavors menu is bursting with Californian flare.
The diner was bustling with activity when I went at lunch hour on a Friday. I was ashamed that I had lived in Dayton my entire life and had never been to Flavors, even though it's been around since 1997.
Organic, gluten free, and carb free menu options are great for those having to pay special attention to what they eat. The salads, wraps, and smoothies caught my eye when I walked in, though the menu was busy and a tad overwhelming. The friend who came with me frequents Flavors. She suggested the Thai Chicken wrap or the Spinach Artichoke Chicken flatbread. I went with the Thai Chicken and she with the latter.
When I ordered, the employee behind the counter said the Thai sauce was made fresh daily and to not worry that even heat sensitive folks can handle the mild kick to the sauce.
The quick service style has you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table.
They offer outdoor seating, weather permitting, and plenty of seating inside. Despite the small restaurant, there was enough room even during the busy lunch hour.
The Thai Chicken burrito was huge and I needed a fork and knife to dig in. I was pleasantly surprised at how many fresh vegetables I found inside the wrap with the organic rice, black beans, cheese, lettuce and spices. The house sauce drizzled on top was great. In fact, next time I visit, I'll probably ask for extra house sauce on the side.
I really appreciated the fresh salsa and chips side item. This beats a side of greasy potato chips or fries when you're being health conscious. Plus, the entree sizes were so big, I had enough to take home for a second meal.
I enjoyed the feel of Flavors - it seemed as though they could move to the middle of Yellow Springs and fit in perfectly with their relaxed, healthy vibe. The ambiance of bright colors and bold decorations on the wall match the robust flavors of their menu.
Being a small, local eatery, their hours can vary. I'd suggest calling ahead if you're unsure if they're open.
So get out of that Panera or Chipotle rut and take the time to try Flavors. You won't be disappointed.
