Whether it's yourself going back to school, or your kid going back to school - it's a great excuse to crack open that special bottle of wine. That special bottle could mean a celebration for the parent, or to drown out the stress of a New Year back to school. Of course, this is for the OF AGE students! Here is what I recommend. Grab a bottle out of your cellar, or a retailer, that you can drink on that first night. Make it a nice one. Starting off the school year with a great bottle of Bordeaux.
A particular vintage that is strikingly good out of Bordeaux, is 2010. It's a vintage that produced a very approachable wine, yet still having great balance.
You may have heard the "left bank vs. right bank" debate from Bordeaux drinkers, yet most won't turn down a great wine from either side. There is a river that runs through the heart of Bordeaux, called the Gironde. If your winery is on the left bank of the Gironde, it most likely will be Cabernet Sauvignon based. If your winery is on the right bank, it most likely will be Merlot or Cabernet Franc based. In 2010, both sides did quite well.
Now after that school lesson, let's get down to a wine! I just enjoyed a bottle of Chateau Gombaude-Guillot from Pomerol, which drank like an elixir. This is a right bank wine, with nice silky fruit and great tannic structure. It's one of those wines that need to open up. I suggest popping the bottle before you go out on your day, and enjoy it at night when you get back.
There is so much history in Bordeaux, that it seems only right to start the school year off with a brief history lesson into arguably the best wine region in the world. One of the biggest romanticism's of wine is tradition, and Bordeaux is at the heart of that.
