Top 10 Rainy Day Must Do's
They say April showers bring May flowers but May gets its fair share of rain too. And when the rain is pouring and the old man is snoring what's a family to do? I have compiled a list of ideas for you and your family to check the next time Mother Nature rains on your parade.
- Volunteer at a non-profit. Second Shelf Thrift Store are having their grand opening in Dayton on June 1, and I can tell you, they will always needs volunteers. Plus you can teach your kids work ethics at the same time. Proceeds from Second Shelf go to help the community and people with Developmental Disabilities. St. Vincent's Homeless shelter always need sack lunches for the families in the shelter. Your local animal shelter always need some love for the furry friends that reside there. There are so many non-profits to choose from you can start with one and spread the good will every time it rains.
- Write a book. This is a great activity to combine with a trip to your local library to research ideas for your own project at home. Have your children help you write the story and draw the pictures. Take a hole punch and yarn and bind it together. Your children will be so excited to read and share the book they made with the whole family.
- Make a slide show. If you have a computer you can upload your child's favorite pictures and create a short movie. If your really savvy you can add music and a narrator. If not your child will love the show just the way it is. Kids young and old love pictures.
- Create your own masterpiece. Whether you paint a picture on a piece of canvas or glue popsicle sticks together and make a house there are so many clever ways to make something artistic. There are so many fun and easy crafts you can make with very little cost involved. And you can even give your creation to a neighbor or loved one when you are done.
- Go to your local nursing home. A lot of times there are folks in the nursing home that don't have family and that can get very lonely. Just call ahead to make sure your nursing home allows this and they will even tell you who would most enjoy/need the visit.
- Get moving. You can still get your blood flowing indoors. Do a workout video, play one of the many active games made for Wii, challenge each other to a push up/sit up contest, play musical chairs or duck duck goose. Anything to stay active which is staying healthy.
- Make a meal or bake a cake. The joy of cooking can be shared no matter your skill level. And some of the best memories are made by preparing food together. Not to mention you get to eat the finished product. Yum!
- Make a duck tape creation. If you don't have access to a computer to watch a how-to video on one of the many amazing things they make with duck tape these days, you can still make some really cool stuff. All you need is an old piece of clothing and duck tape and start taping. The key is to make sure you don't tape all the way around. Leave the seems open so the clothes/accessory will stay stretchy (if it needs to) when you wear the finish product.
- Have a fashion show. Men can do this too. Guys may want to dress up like it's Halloween so they feel "manly". You can create a fashion show and take pictures or video tape it. It will be super fun to watch for years to come.
- And lastly here are several other classic ideas. How about movies, skating, bowling, shopping, museums, theater, dining out, laser tag, arcades, bouncy houses, the YMCA or fishing. (You'll find plenty of suggestions in Dayton Local's Things to do with kids guide!) Building a fort, making homemade play dough, having a spa day or doing makeovers, board games, video games, coloring, karaoke, listening to music, hide and go seek or I spy. I could probably go on forever.
I hope I gave you a few suggestions that may have slipped your mind or better yet you haven't ever thought of. Either way I hope your family has a wonderful time the next rainy day you share together.
