Local Authors Release Children's Book About Autism
Published by Future Horizons, a world leader in autism & sensory resources and conferences, Be a Friend: PEERspective on Autism is meant to help readers of all ages better understand common characteristics of autism in an effort to promote acceptance, kindness, and empathy.
“Children are often curious about others and ask questions or form assumptions about those they perceive as different in less than ideal ways,” Schmidt shares. “By introducing characteristics of autism in a way that promotes understanding and inclusion, we hope to prevent negative assumptions that might be based on confusion or misunderstanding of differences.”
Pairing accessible rhymes and engaging illustrations with more detailed explanations, the book is meant to be a tool for children and adults to read together to open up discussion about autism. Prompts throughout the book also encourage discussion of ways we are all more alike than different. Perfect for use in families, classrooms, clubs, and more, the book aims to provide perspective and education to readers of all ages.
Be a Friend: PEERspective on Autism is available for purchase on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble, and via the publisher’s website.
