A Duck Makes A Difference!

When Hope Robertson enrolled her four-month old daughter Angel in the Childcare Program at United Rehabilitation Services (URS), she didn't know if she would celebrate her first birthday.  Angel was in the care of Hospice at birth because she was born with hydranencephaly, a condition where 80 percent of the gray matter in her brain was missing due to an in-utero stroke.  She wasn't expected to live long and her family was told she would be in a “vegetative state”.  This single mother of three needed to find childcare to meet the critical-care needs of Angel and soon discovered that no center or private provider was equipped to handle these demands.  Hope turned to the internet, found United Rehabilitation Services (URS), and eventually moved her family to Huber Heights to be closer to the center so she could continue to work full-time.

Angel attends URS’ 5-Star Rated Early Childhood Education Programs and her chronic medical needs are monitored by the on-site nurses at URS.  She is g-tube fed and receives Physical and Occupational Therapies while she is at URS, saving her mom valuable time after work by having these services under one roof.  Hope also has two sons who are typically developing, and both boys attend the School-Age and Summer Camp Programs URS offers.  Today, Angel has reached milestones her doctors never expected and will turn 4 years old the day after the Regatta!

Angel is this year’s Ambassador for the 13th Annual URS Rubber Duck Regatta, presented by Synchrony Financial, on Friday evening, September 16th at RiverScape Metropark.  More than 20,000 rubber ducks will be dropped from the Riverside Drive Bridge for a race with 5 great prizes including a 7-bedroom houseboat vacation from Norris Lake Houseboat Rentals and a $1,000 gift card to Kroger!  100% of the proceeds support children with special needs like Angel. Adopt your ducks today at daytonducks.com or visit your local Kroger register!
