Behind the Scenes: Nice Work If You Can Get It
To star in the national tour of a Broadway musical is nice work, if you can get it, which Alex Enterline can attest to as he has the lead role in “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” The opportunity is especially rewarding to Enterline as it’s his very first national tour. He’s thrilled to part of a hilarious musical that features romance, classic songs and some high-step dancing. “Nice Work If You Can Get It” is on stage at the Schuster Center, February 10-15.
“It’s a really fun musical comedy,” said Enterline, who plays Jimmy Winter, a wealthy playboy who’s on his fourth marriage. Winter’s life really gets interesting with the introduction of Billie Bendix (Mariah MacFarlane) a feisty bootlegger. The show is set in the 1920’s during the Prohibition and their relationship, along with the alcohol leads to a lot of hijinks.
A facet of acting that actors take great pleasure in is the opportunity to play someone other than themselves. Enterline is vastly different from his character, but they do share one common bond that he was able to connect with. I’m definitely not a wealthy playboy, but I do have lots of heart like Jimmy does. He strives to become a better person for Billie and I would be the same way,” he said.
All the laughs in the show, makes it fun for Enterline to perform each night, along with the joy of singing music written by George & Ira Gershwin. The songs featured include, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”
Between the comedy, music, love story, dance and lavish costumes there is something for everyone to enjoy about “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” “It’s a show for all generations, the older people enjoy the old songs in a newer version,” said Enterline.
It’s been a whirlwind for Enterline as shortly after graduating in May from Oklahoma City University, he got the part in “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” and has traveled to parts of the country he had never seen. While with the tour he went to the Mall of America in Minnesota for the first time and later will be his first trip to Las Vegas.
The experience of performing nightly while always going from one city to the next has lead Enterline to get educated about taking good care of himself. “I have learned a lot about how to stay healthy and in good shape while traveling the country,” he said.
A healthy dose of laughs and feel good music is guaranteed to come from “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” at the Schuster Center from February 10 – 15. Tickets start at $25 and are available online. Ticket Center Stage hours are Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday noon to 4 p.m., and two hours prior to each performance.
