What you don't know about SICSA
What's with the name "SICSA?"
SICSA might be sort of hard to say but it stands for "Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals." SICSA started in a garage in 1974 when a group of concerned citizens decided that the community needed another option for housing strays and other unwanted companion animals. Since then, the organization has grown thanks to the dedication of its volunteers and the support of the Dayton community. Thanks to this outpouring of support, SICSA is able to adopt out over 1500 dogs and cats every year as well as spaying and neutering around 3000 animals annually.
How is SICSA different than the city-run animal shelters?
The idea for starting SICSA centered around not only providing temporary shelter for strays, but to also educate the community on the humane treatment of animals. While they have a great shelter that houses many dogs and cats, they also offer programs and services to the community - especially for children. Check out their website for information on the camps and programs for kids.
How can I help?
Why not attend a SICSA event? SICSA is hosting a Bark n' Bling Jewelry Sale February 5-6 and don't forget to sign up for their annual Lift Your Leg 10K, 5K, and 1 mile race/walk on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Stay up-to-date on SICSA events and fundraisers by following them on facebook.
Join the SICSA volunteers to work with the animals and help out at the shelter or remotely at events in the community. SICSA is also always looking for foster homes for their pets, learn more about their foster program. Want to spend some one-on-one time with a shelter pet? Join SICSA's Paw Partners program to take an adoptable dog on your next walk or run.
SICSA could always use donations and there are plenty of ways to spread the wealth. Donate money online by visiting their donation page, or if you would prefer to purchase items for the shelter directly, take a look at SICSA's wish list. There are even ways to donate without trying such as the Kroger Community Rewards Program and the Dorothy Lane Market Good Neighbor Program that both donate a percentage of your grocery bill to SICSA - just make sure to register your rewards card before you start shopping. The same goes for Amazon Smile - visit smile.amazon.com and select SICSA as your designated charity of choice.
And, of course, adopt your pets from SICSA!
Thriving organizations like SICSA show the world what a wonderful, humane place Dayton really is. The fact that SICSA has grown so much over the years all while being totally supported by the community prove that Dayton's heart is in the right place!
