CALL FOR ART: Annual Art Auction Drop-Off
CALL FOR ART: Annual Art Auction Drop-Off
DESCRIPTION
The Art Auction is The Contemporary Dayton’s (The Co) primary fundraiser—a lively, casual, event of 200+ guests eating, drinking, and mobile bidding on 100+ original works of art donated by area artists which range in fair market value of between $100–$2,500 to support The Co’s core programs including original, commissioned exhibitions by local, national, and international artists; free public programs; resources for area artists including pro bono legal services; and community art initiatives like Art in the City and the Urban Art Intersections – the City of Dayton Mural Program.
Please note, The Co follows current CDC public health and safety guidelines. Guests may be required to wear masks.
ELIGIBILITY
All area artists are invited to donate one original work of art. Artists do not have to be Members of The Co to participate. The organization is committed to presenting a range of media and styles for a variety of prices from both emerging and established artists—therefore, The Co seeks original work of the highest quality, structural integrity, frame/display quality and condition, and appropriate market value. For these reasons, The Co reserves the right to jury artwork according to these merits.
PRESENTATION OF ARTWORK
Artworks must be original (no reproductions), clean, dry, and ready to hang (hardware must be included). The Co encourages the donation of works created in the last three years and for work to be presented with clean, neutral matting and with unadorned, neutral framing. We recommend Custom Frame Services (near downtown Dayton) for advice and fair pricing to donating artists. Additionally, The Co asks artists to take care in the completion of the artwork information form—the title, media, and brief description of the work (which The Co uses in marketing materials, on the Auction website, and in-person descriptions)—all play an important role in connecting to the audience and to buyers.
VALUATION
Fair Market Value (or FMV) is the price an artwork is expected to sell in the market to which it is presented. FMV will be assessed and agreed upon by the artist and The Co staff. The opening bid for artworks begins at 60-80% of the FMV to start the bidding and invite excitement, but the goal is for works to sell above the FMV. The amount a work sells above the FMV can help advance the valuation of future work, but if a work sells below FMV, or not at all, it is not a negative reflection of the work.
