7 ways to get even more out of the giant resource hub that is your local Dayton Metro Library.
Getting the Most Out of Your Public Library
The public library isn’t just a place for stopping in and checking out books anymore. As our worldly lifestyle continues to soar through changes and trends in technology it can be tough to keep up. Luckily that is not the case for the Dayton Metro Library as it embraces the future and keeps up with the time. Whether you’re a frequent visitor at your local branch or tend to stick to your computer from home here are 7 ways to get even more out of the giant resource hub.
- Research databases— Students may already be quite friendly with this resource for searching academic journals and articles, but the databases don’t stop with academia. There are over 50 databases, which include newspaper archives, Dayton and Ohio history, research help for kids, and beyond. My favorites include Mango Languages if you’re interested in learning a new language, Bookflix for popular and classic children’s book videos, and Novelist which is perfect for updating your reading list based on your likes and interests.
- Digital downloads—I personally take advantage of this resource the most. Digital libraries are growing fast and are perfect for those of us who enjoy reading and other media on our most used electronics. Use Overdrive to borrow audio books and e-books, Hoopla to access movies, music, and television series, and Zinio to browse your favorite magazines for free.
- Wireless Printing—All branches of the Dayton Metro Library are now equipped with wireless printing. You can print from your laptop, tablet, or smartphone while in the library or even send remotely from your personal device while on the go. After that you just pick up your pages at your convenience.
- Text a librarian—If you are in need of research help or just looking for a “how to” book on your new hobby, a librarian is available quite literally at your fingertips. You can call, text, or e-mail your question and a librarian will be there to give you a quick response or link to something that may help you.
- Community rooms—Booking a room for your knitting club or to hold that meeting you are hosting has never been easier. Most Dayton area branches have you covered and offer up rooms that you can book for free. It’s also a great place to meet with a tutor or for a study session.
- Activities and classes—Most people are aware of the number of programs the library has for children such as story time and movie nights, but the library also offers many activities for adults as well. You can sign up for events and classes on almost anything from computer skills and photography to gardening and book discussions.
- Book Club Bags—If you’ve ever wanted to start a book club but didn’t know where to begin then this resource is for you. Book Club Bags can be reserved for pickup at your branch. The kit includes a tote bag with 15 copies of the same book and discussion questions.
