Gem City Market opens in Dayton
After 6 years of planning and over a year of construction, Dayton’s first cooperative grocery store opened its doors to the public at noon today.
Gem City Market is located at 324 Salem Avenue, just across the bridge from downtown Dayton, and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The 8,000-square-foot market aims to serve residents in West Dayton who have otherwise had few local options for fresh groceries. The Gem City Market also boasts a full deli and a coffee shop. There is also a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen for classes and programs on nutrition, a community room, and a mini health clinic.
The Gem City Market facebook page was buzzing with excitement this morning. "You built this- and we're mighty proud to welcome you to our Market," a post read that attracted more than 1000 likes and shares within a couple of hours.
"There will inevitably be a few hurdles and we have no doubt that we will overcome them together. We ask that with your excitement, you bring patience during the first few weeks of shopping at Gem City Market. We appreciate every single one of you and know the first time you step through our doors (and maybe the second and third) there is going to be an immense amount of emotion. We are a little emotional as well! WELCOME TO OUR MARKET!"
