Festivals, Fitness, Music at RiverScape in August
The public can enjoy recreation opportunities, festivals and more at RiverScape MetroPark (237 E. Monument Ave.) this August.
The month kicks off on Aug. 3 with Pickin’ in the Park, part of the RiverScape Summer Music Series — supported by media sponsors, Cox Media Group and iHeartRadio. During Pickin’ in the Park, guests can enjoy a sampling of outdoor recreation activities during the Wagner Subaru Urban Outdoor Experience, produced by Five Rivers MetroParks.
One of 18 clean, safe MetroParks, RiverScape MetroPark is positioned at the center of more than 340 miles of paved recreation trails — the nation’s largest paved trail network. RiverScape MetroPark offers weekend bike and accessory rentals to those who wish to embark on a cycling adventure.
“Many families are gearing up for the impending school year during August, but we want to remind people that there are still so many fun ways to savor the last days of summer outdoors,” said RiverScape MetroPark manager, Meredith Adamisin. “There are opportunities for people of all ages to be active and connect to nature in unique ways, from cycling along the river to relaxing under the pavilion while enjoying beautiful views and listening to your favorite local bands.”
While enjoying summer activities at RiverScape MetroPark, visitors also are can watch paddlers in the RiverScape River Run. MetroParks is creating new and exciting ways for novice and experienced paddlers to get out and paddle in the rivers in downtown Dayton, including the RiverScape River Run whitewater feature.
August Schedule at RiverScape MetroPark:
Music at Lunch: Grab food from a variety of food trucks and the RiverScape Café, enjoy live music and free WiFi. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Sept. 28.
Fitness in the Park: These free exercise sessions are held most Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. under the RiverScape Pavilion. Participants should bring their own water bottles and towels or mats. Classes vary between Zumba and yoga, and the schedule can be found online at metroparks.org/RiverScape.
Pickin’ in the Park & Urban Outdoor Experience: On Friday, Aug. 3, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., enjoy the string-picking sounds of The Hussey Brothers, Slippery Creek and Urban Pioneers. Until 8:30 p.m. during Pickin’ in the Park, guests can try a variety of outdoor activities — such as slacklining, mountain biking and disc golf — at the Urban Outdoor Experience. Urban Outdoor Experience is a taste of what people can expect at Five Rivers MetroParks’ fall event, the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience. The premier outdoor adventure festival in the Midwest, the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience is Oct. 6 and 7 at Eastwood MetroPark.
R&B Hot Summer Music: On Friday, Aug. 17 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. LYD will take the RiverScape Pavilion stage to treat concertgoers with an evening of R&B entertainment.
Big Band Nights: Enjoy classic instruments, upbeat tunes and dancing on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. during Big Band Night featuring Barry Campbell Big Band with Vocalist Elaina McCormick.
During R&B Hot Summer Music and Big Band Nights, a local food truck will be present and the Fountain Snack Bar will be open. Pickin’ in the Park attendees can visit a variety of local food trucks and purchase drinks thanks to partner/sponsor A Special Wish Foundation. Those attending concerts at RiverScape MetroPark should bring a lawn chair for seating.
Festivals: Visit RiverScape MetroPark during August to experience the GermanFest Picnic on Friday, Aug. 10; Saturday, Aug. 11; and Sunday, Aug. 12.
RiverScape Rentals helps riders explore the Dayton region’s more than 340 miles of paved recreation trails — the nation’s largest paved trail network — with cruisers, road bikes, tandems and child attachments available for rent. Push bikes also are available for toddlers so they can learn to ride. RiverScape Rentals is open weekends through Labor Day weekend from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Five Rivers Fountain of Lights and interactive fountain also will be open through Labor Day. The fountain runs daily, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
