Centerville to Recycle 500 Pounds of Plastic Bags and Film
The City of Centerville is partnering with Centerville-Washington Park District and Washington-Centerville Public Library to collect 500 pounds of recyclable plastic film before August 1, 2021. When the goal is reached, decking manufacturer Trex will donate a bench to the City made of recycled plastic as part of its Trex Community Recycling Program.
Residents and visitors can drop off their plastic recyclables in bins at three locations:
- Centerville Municipal Building, 100 West Spring Valley Road
- Centerville-Washington Park District Activity Center, 221 North Main Street
- Woodbourne Library, 6060 Far Hills Avenue
Centerville Public Works will collect and weigh the items. 500 pounds translates to roughly 40,500 individual plastic bags.
Members of the year-long advisory committee Sustainable Centerville recognized a need for plastic bag and film recycling after an event organized to clean up litter at Cornerstone Park in November 2020. These items are not accepted as part of Rumpke’s recycling program.
Accepted items for Community Recycling Program:
- Single-use plastic grocery bags
- Bread bags
- Plastic overwrap for toilet paper, napkins, paper towels and diapers
- Plastic overwrap on bulk items in cases (ex: water bottles, snacks)
- Plastic retail bags (with hard plastic and string handles removed)
- Clean, dry plastic food storage bags (ex: Ziploc bags)
- Polyethylene film labeled #2 or #4
- Stretch wrap
- Produce bags
- Dry cleaning bags
- Newspaper sleeves and bags
- Plastic cereal box liners
- Plastic shipping envelopes, bubble wrap and air pillows (deflate and remove labels if possible)
Upon completion of the challenge with goals met, the Trex Company, Inc. will donate one recycled-plastic bench to the City.
The City has also partnered with Kroger to promote the company’s ongoing plastics recycling program. Families can bring the same materials to bins inside the front lobby of the two Kroger stores in Centerville: 1095 South Main Street and 5400 Cornerstone North Boulevard.
Sustainable Centerville is guided by the Mission of the City to improve the environment in the City of Centerville by working with residents and community partners to develop recommendations for City endorsed initiatives that promote a sustainable future.
