So far this year, we have discussed ways to discover our passion and genuinely connect with others during career transition. This month, we are going to discuss the "5 W's and 1 H" of one of the most important elements of the job search - volunteering!
WHAT: Volunteering is giving back to your community in a way that benefits others and you.
WHO IS INVOLVED: You (of course) and an organization that aligns with your passion. You may already have friends or family members who can connect you to a good fit.
WHEN: Consider volunteering several hours a week. This is enough time to give you a sense of accomplishment, keep you visible to those with whom you work, and give you opportunities to network. Volunteering too many hours can take you away from your job search, so be careful to set boundaries for yourself.
WHERE: Dayton is a very giving community; we are home to thousands of non-profits, many of which are highlighted right here at DaytonLocal! You can find additional non-profit organizations at www.guidestar.org. Often, people choose to work for non-profits that have assisted them, their friends, or their family. Regardless of your choice, it is very important to devote your time to a cause that matches your interests and your job search.
WHY: There are three main reasons volunteering is so important during your job search. First, it is a great way to show others how good you are at something you enjoy. Remember that good professionals are always on the lookout for quality workers for themselves or for others. Second, volunteering often leads to employment, as companies are typically more prone to hire from within than outside the organization. Third, volunteering can help bridge employment gaps and will reveal who you are on a personal level to prospective organizations. Always include volunteer work on your professional resume.
HOW: Once you choose your volunteering venue, place a phone call to the organization's volunteer coordinator - or call the main number and ask for him or her if the name is not visible online. Clearly state why you are calling, and feel free to tell the contact a little bit about yourself. In this initial conversation, find out if you and the organization are a good match and exactly what opportunities are available. Clarify your availability and find out what the next step is in securing your volunteer work there. Act as professionally with the organization as you would with your new place of employment, because, it just may end up being your new place of employment - or very likely could lead you there!
While in transition, we often feel emotionally and socially depleted and may not even want to leave the house. Volunteer work helps get us outside our comfort zones while changing others' lives in the process. What a great combination!
