The Simon & Garfunkel Story
The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been entertaining audiences for decades. Fans will have the rare opportunity to hear the duo’s full catalog of hit songs, performed live in the internationally - acclaimed theatre show ‘The Simon & Garfunkel Story’ at the Schuster Center on February 9. The immersive rock concert style show chronicles their entire career from rags to riches, including their dramatic split. It all culminates with the famous ‘The Concert in Central Park’ reunion in 1981, which more than half a million fans attended.
It’s a show that those who have a connection with the esteemed duo, doesn’t want to miss. “The people who come are typically big fans of their music, as am I, so it’s like a big communion of love in celebration of their work,” said Taylor Bloom. Bloom performs the musical stylings of Simon.
Along with Bloom, the show stars Ben Cooley. They don’t portray Simon & Garfunkel, but act as fans who aim to emulate their distinct sound. Beyond the vocals, Bloom relishes the opportunity to use his skills with the guitar.
Using a state of the art video projection, photos, and original film footage, the show also features a full live band performing all their hits, including ‘Mrs. Robinson’, ‘Cecilia’, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, ‘Homeward Bound’ and many more. Events in history over the time periods covered, beginning in the sixties, and details about the lives of Simon & Garfunkel are covered. “We have found that even the biggest and most devoted fans end up learning something they didn’t know before,” said Bloom.
Born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley near Middletown VA, Bloom currently resides in New York and is thrilled to be on his first national tour. “I’ve never been west of the east coast so I can’t wait to see the country,” said Bloom. “I’m also excited to visit Dayton for the first time. I’ve been to other parts of Ohio and enjoyed it.”
The song ‘America’ was Bloom’s first exposure to Simon & Garfunkel, and it made an instant impression, but never imagined that someday he’d be singing the song to millions all across the country. “I was in my teens and I had no idea what I was listening to, but I remember thinking, ‘Whoa, this is amazing!” he said.
It’s their unique gifts that Simon & Garfunkel each contributed to their music, that Bloom feels has made it resonate with so many for all these years. “Simon writes some of the most beautiful and poetic lyrics, without getting high minded while Garfunkel’s harmony elevates the music to the next level,” said Bloom.
With more than 100 million album sales since 1965, Simon & Garfunkel is one the most successful folk-rock duos of all time. They have won 10 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
