Winter Solstice Sunrise at Fort Ancient
On Thursday, December 21, 2017, Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve celebrates Winter Solstice Sunrise.
This event honors those who revered the ancient ceremonial site some two millennia ago. Fort Ancient’s gates open at 7:30 a.m., after which an observance of the winter solstice will take visitors back in time to a period when such practices were a vital part of the lives of ancient people.
The acknowledgment of the rising of the sun on the shortest day of the year reveals surprisingly detailed traditional knowledge and familiarity with the movement of the sun and the moon.
Site Manager Jack Blosser will share the impressive history of Fort Ancient and give context to the annual event. Winter Solstice Sunrise is FREE to the public!
