Veg Out at Veggie-Palooza: 4 Reasons Not To Miss It
Discover new ways to get kids craving produce at Veggie-palooza on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church.
Find fun recipes, try new foods, learn about local produce and more at Veggie-palooza:
- On the grill: Grilling up your veggies gives them a unique flavor that’s enjoyable for the whole family. Learn about all the veggies that cook up great on the grill and then taste test your favorites!
- Pizza party: Universally loved, pizza is the perfect vehicle to introduce kids to new veggies. Visit the make-your-own mini veggie pizza station to create a culinary treat with your kiddos.
- Fun presentations: From clowns making kale chips to Crock-Pot veggie creations, there are many opportunities for families to learn how to prepare veggies at Veggie-palooza. Homefull will also talk to families about the organization’s garden and how to use SNAP benefits. Those benefits and Produce Perks rewards are currently available at the 2nd Street Market.
According to the Health and Human Services and the United States Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines, children are supposed to eat three servings of vegetables and four servings of fruits daily. Adults aren’t off the healthy-eating hook either, as it’s recommended they eat five servings of vegetables and four servings of fruit each day.
With both childhood and adult obesity on the rise, it’s supremely important for families to make healthy choices that can help decrease the risk of heart disease, diabetes and more. While many children and adults fall short of the suggested daily fruit and vegetable intake, there are many tasty ways to incorporate more veggies into kid-friendly meals.
Discover community resources: Be sure to visit Five Rivers MetroParks, the United Way of Greater Dayton, the Gem City Market, The FoodBank, Homefull, Preschool Promise, Hall Hunger Initiative and Santa Clara Juicery during Veggie-palooza. These community organizations will be sharing information about healthy eating, gardening and where to access fresh food.
