Rhythm and Roots Festival

On the front stage at 11:00 am our local hometown favorites “Rum River Blend” will be opening the festival with a rousing bluegrass offering which will feature septuagenarian, Carl Phillis on fiddle and the ever-effervescent Linda Tatarian on banjo. Noon will bring Dayton’s New Old-Fashioned band exploring the roots of rock. This group has intimate harmonies, punchy guitars, and lyrics firmly rooted in the Midwest lifestyle. Bringing us gospel at 1:00 pm will be Nikki D and the Sisters of Thunder. “Guitar World” magazine called Nikki D the “Jimi Hendrix of sacred steel.” Straight from the Mississippi Delta, Terry Harmonica Bean will be playing the blues at 2:00 pm. He not only keeps the blues alive, but he brings a bit of himself to his music, evolving his own unique sound to add to the great blues harmonica players of our time. At 3:00 pm we will celebrate country music with a relatively new band called the Great Northern String Band. This band features Brian Spirk on mandolin, John Lardinois on violin, Khrys Blank, Erich Reith, Rich Reuter and Josh Johnson making this band a powerful sound with solid musicianship. Next will be The Typical Johnsons at 4:00 pm. This band of four has a very polished but earthy folk vibe with strong rock influences. Our headliner is BuffaloWabs and the Price Hill Hustle who will be starting at 5:30 pm. The Hustle is an Americana group with a rootsy Mumford and Sons sound with hard driving rhythms and rich, deep vocal harmonies.

Paul Nelson will return with his wonderful hand crafted flutes and this year Trojan City Music store will be setting up several artisan crafters of musical instruments. Vinyl albums will be for sale through Around About Books and from Tim Kozul’s collection. Be sure to stop at our CD table for the latest from all our featured musicians and see the other vendor tables on the first floor.

Tim Kozul’s vintage vinyl exhibit will consist of albums from seven genres of American roots music.  The genres represented are folk, blues, bluegrass, traditional country, folk-rock, country-rock and Americana.  Approximately 100 record album jackets will be on display. Enjoy a self-guided tour or one of the guided tours by the collector.

Perfect weather has been requested but in case of rain we will move the festival inside the lovely three-story mansion, which sits in the heart of downtown Troy, Ohio. Because of the generosity of the Troy community there will be no entrance fee for this festival. Parking will be available in various lots nearby.
