National Geographic Live - Cory Richards: Photographer

CORY RICHARDS’ life has followed an irregular arc. Climbing at five, a high school dropout at 14, and the first American to climb an 8,000 meter peak in winter at 29, his path has been anything but “normal.” Perhaps it’s those experiences that have lent to Richards’ insatiable pursuit and passion for exposing the story and richness of the human element. A climber for the north face athlete team, much of his work has extended from expeditions to the greater ranges of the world where he has carved a niche as one of the leading adventure and expedition photographers.

“Expeditions are an incredible opportunity to see who people are and how they respond to struggle, both external and internal…and it’s that that tells a great story.”

Richards’ camera has taken him from the controlled and complex studio to the wild and remote corners of Nepal and Pakistan…all in the attempt to capture not only the soul of adventure and exploration, but the “beauty” inherent in our modern society as well. His client list includes National Geographic magazine, Outside, The New York Times, Red Bull, and Fossil. His film work has won awards at nearly every major adventure film festival including the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Film Festival for his film Cold. In 2011, he was awarded the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award for his efforts as both a climber and visual storyteller.
