Ice Cutting Demonstrations at Carriage Hill MetroPark
Before electricity, people used tools to cut the surface ice from lakes and rivers to sell or use as cold storage. In the 19th century, ice was also a popular export from Scandinavia and North America.
Provided the ice stays thick enough, Ice Cutting Demonstrations will take place at Carriage Hill MetroPark Saturday, from 11 to 3 p.m. at Cedar Lake. Learn how ice was cut, stored and used on a farm in the 1880s.
Please note: While temps are currently cooperative, if the depth of ice changes over the week this program will be cancelled. Please check in the day before the program so you can know before you go. Thank you for your patience while we assess ongoing conditions with the safety of our staff and volunteers in mind.
This program is free and for all ages.
Layer up and take a look at how harvesting ice was done over 100 years ago with traditional tools.Park at the Cedar Lake entrance.
