The Great Miami River Watershed
The Dayton region may not be near an ocean or lake, but water here is plentiful.
Residents are fortunate to have plentiful, high-quality water groundwater, and many recreation opportunities afforded by rivers, lakes and streams. Protecting these valuable resources is important and understanding their history is fascinating.
Learn more about this amazing local resource by attending Five Rivers MetroParks’ annual Water Wisdom series, comprised of two programs held during June from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark.
June 11: Speakers from Miami Conservancy District and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will tell the story of the Great Miami River Watershed, including its deep geologic history and management since it was settled and developed.
June 18: The series concludes with Water Wise Homes and Gardens, where participants learn water-saving household management and gardening techniques and how to reduce waterway pollution by being mindful of chemical usage.
Each program is just $10 to register. Visit www.metroparks.org or call 937-275-PARK to sign up.
The Miami Valley is rich in water resources and contains an extensive buried valley aquifer from which 97 percent of the regional population’s potable water needs are met. The Great Miami River Watershed drains four other major waterways to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico.
