Charleston Falls to temporarily close due to overcrowding

Overcrowding caused by a surge in families visiting local parks to enjoy the outdoors has resulted in the closure of the most popular park in Miami County.
Charleston Falls Nature Preserve has seen attendance soar since the state issued the stay-at-home order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. The order permits "essential activities" including visiting "parks and outdoor spaces" so long as individuals practice social distancing by remaining 6 feet away from other people.
A statement posted on The Miami County Park District facebook page today read as follows:
"Due to overcrowding and compliance for social distancing, Charleston Falls Preserve will be closed effective Friday, April 3 at 12:01 a.m. until further notice. The Park District is taking these additional measures to protect the health and safety of the staff and visitors from the threat of COVID-19."
The Miami County Park District Executive Director J. Scott Myers said while he regretted having to close the park, they had no other feasible option.
"Unfortunately, with the heavy use we've seen at Charleston Falls over the past few weeks, public safety is a significant concern," Myers said. "As of now the other MCPD parks will remain open so people can reap the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors."
