CDC guidelines on Halloween activities, trick-or-treating

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidance on the Halloween activities amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The CDC is warning some traditional Halloween activities should be avoided as they "can be high-risk for spreading viruses". These include traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, indoor haunted houses, traveling to rural festivals not in your area, and other activities where social distancing is difficult, including taking hayrides with strangers.

The full list of recommendations, including "several safer, alternative ways to participate in Halloween" can be found on the CDC website.

The CDC are also warning that costume masks may not be effective as cloth masks.

"A costume mask should not be used unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers the mouth and nose and doesn't leave gaps."

They also warn that wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth could also be dangerous, since that it might make it harder to breathe.

Is Trick or Treat being held in your area this year?

In the Miami Valley, several local communities have already announced plans to proceed with trick or treat.  We are currently updating our 2020 Beggar's Night guide as we are able to confirm each community event.  Most have made it clear that their decision is subject to change, should new guidance be issued by either the state or local health departments.

In addition, there are still plenty of other local fall activities scheduled this year, including 6 haunted houses.
