Catch a Rising Star Concert & Gala

Catch A Rising Star is a multi-stage musical event held at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, Friday May 1, 2015 starting at 7pm.  The three hour gala features three separate performance venues with each stage showcasing a different group of gifted young musicians from the Dayton area.  Performances are scheduled in the Boonshoft’s Caryl D. Philips Space Theatre, the Education Center and the Science on a Sphere Room in a staggered format throughout the evening such that guests have the opportunity to enjoy performances of all musicians.  Heavy hors d’oeuvres and confections are provided along with complimentary beer and wine.  The event is semi-formal with black tie optional.  Tickets are $88.10 and sold on-line at www.discoverclassical.org or by calling Rose Bradley at 937.222.9377.

Performers in 2015 include Discover Classical’s Young Talent Search winners from 2013, pianist, Benjamin Gittens, and vocalist, Maya Vansuch, and from 2014, violinist, Spencer Sharp.  Also appearing in 2015’s Catch A Rising Star is world renowned pianist Alpin Hong.  The New York Times called him “a pianistic firebrand” in a review of his standing-room only New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.  Alpin Hong is a native of Michigan and made his orchestral debut with the Kalamazoo Symphony at the age of ten.  The Santa Barbara News Press hailed him as “…a tour de force. Mr. Hong evoked a kind of Beatlemania when he came on stage”. His ability to captivate young audiences prompted the Ocala Star-Banner to call him “Classical for the iGeneration”.  Alpin recognizes that the arts provide young people with qualities necessary for success in any field, including confidence, self-expression, and perseverance.  He seeks to give aspiring young artists a sense of belonging and community that is critical for their development in the world beyond the walls of their schools.  Mr. Hong will conclude the evening’s performances.
