Oregon District's Fifth Street one of the Great Places in America
Stretching a quarter mile through the Historic Oregon District, East Fifth Street is lined with shops, restaurants and taverns, making it a popular local destination. The street is also home to the monthly First Friday celebration, as well as Hauntfest, Taste of the Oregon District, and a variety of other events, nightlife and attractions.
Commissioner Matt Joseph, local business leaders and representatives of the American Planning Association will attend a ceremonial event at 530 E. Fifth St. on Friday, Oct. 2, at 5:30 p.m. APA's Great Places in America program recognizes streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the United States demonstrating exceptional character, quality, and attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country.
In their summary, the APA states "Fifth Street is the commercial centerpiece of the Oregon District — Dayton, Ohio's oldest neighborhood and the first listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Locally owned businesses are woven into the fabric of history along this street and have fostered a strong sense of community and place for those who spend time here." Read more here.
