Oregon District 8-4 Memorial, "The Seed of Life" artist team extends public invitation as mosaic project begins.

Open House event Jan 7 for Oregon District 8-4 Memorial

“The Seed of Life” artist team invites you to come together for a time of peace and healing by placing the first tiles of the large ground mosaic that will be installed in the ground near The Trolley Stop. The Oregon District 8-4 Memorial is in honor of the nine victims, first responders, families, and all those affected by the senseless violence of the August 4, 2019 Oregon District shooting.

Being place-makers and peacemakers has been foundational for The Seed of Life team (consisting of sculptor Terry Welker, poet laureate Sierra Leone, designer James Pate, and mosaic artist Jes McMillan) Their team statement reads, “We are place-makers and peacemakers. In order to create a place of peace and healing, we must first heal the place. Rather than simply placing an object in the existing setting, we’ve chosen to recreate the entire plaza within the existing site.” The Seed of Life, the name of the memorial and the sacred geometric symbol chosen for the mosaic, represents the cycles of life and the interconnectedness of all things, an excellent reminder when searching for a place and peace in life.
