Michael Somerville at Wileys Comedy Niteclub
For advice on relationships, Michael Somerville is a highly regarded source. However, the comedian is likely to offer more bouts of uncontrollable laughter than he is to give the tools to turn a heart afire. His wisdom has been spread through multiple mediums, including as a columnist and television host, but Somerville is best known for his stand-up. Rather than focusing on matters of the heart, Somerville’s attention will be on touching the funny bone of those who visits Wiley’s on April 9-11.
His wit and wisdom portrayed on stage, earned Somerville the position of writing a dating column for Glamour Magazine, titled ‘Jake’ for three years. Whether pronounced verbally or written, Somerville connects with his audience. “I’m sure some of my ex’s got a good chuckle from the fact that I was giving relationship advice,” said Somerville.
A graduate of Notre Dame University, Somerville majored in Marketing, and likes to believe he uses what he learned to Market his range of talents. “I try to convince my parents I still use my degree to sell myself. After paying for my education, they were less than thrilled about me becoming a comedian,” he said.
Based on the variety of opportunities Somerville has accumulated it can be hard to argue against his case. In addition to his work as a comedian and columnist, Somerville has developed a strong television presence with appearances as a panelist on VH1, Bravo, and The History Channel. He’s also hosted shows for Nickelodeon, Starz, and Encore.
For the former FLN network, Somerville wrote, hosted and starred in the reality series ‘Wingman,’ on which he helped others form relationships. ‘Wingman’ was a real learning experience for Somerville, he really enjoyed, but unfortunately FLN was shut down. “I just don’t have a show cancelled, but I bring the whole network down,” Somerville joked.
A highlight for Somerville has been his four times as a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, equivalent to the Super Bowl for comedians. He grew up watching Letterman and to be on the show was more than he could have ever dreamed of. “To be on the Ed Sullivan Theater stage where the Beatles performed and hear Letterman laughing behind me at my jokes is surreal,” he said.
To get laughs. Somerville relies on life’s truths rather than curse words. His act takes after his life, in that it’s clean. “I grew up in a family that is funny without cursing, so why start now? You can be funny and clean,” said Somerville.
Though Somerville’s routine is clean, his face is unlikely to be cleanly shaven. One of the perks of being a comedian is that the profession allows him to be more casual than the business world. After graduating from Notre Dame, Somerville moved to New York City and worked in Advertising, but the lifestyle didn’t agree with him. “I didn’t like getting up early and having to shave every day,” he said.
Don’t miss Michael Somerville at Wiley’s, April 9-11.
