Old Scratch Pizza, It's What's New in Downtown Dayton
Old Scratch Pizza opened October 18th following a complete renovation of the building in the 800 block of South Patterson Blvd. I stopped in to check out the new space and try their Neapolitan style pizza. Neapolitan describes a style of pizza that originated in Naples, Italy.
The simple painted logo and vintage style “pizza” sign lit with bulbs facing Patterson welcome visitors to a brightly lit, clean, open space with a bar on one side and dining area with adjoining patio on the other. Wooden picnic tables, paper plates, and paper towels confirm a relaxed casual atmosphere.
If you plan to eat in the dining area, stop and place your order at the front counter. The menu can be found on the wall and lists available menu items, options, and drinks. Place your order, get your number, select a table, and a server will bring your order when “your number is up”.
Old Scratch’s open kitchen allows you to watch the entire pizza making process, from spreading the dough to removing them from the wood-fired ovens. Open hearth 800-degree ovens can cook a pizza in as little as 90 seconds.
I selected a seat at the full-service bar, where I met bartender Michael, an Army veteran who ate Neapolitan pizza in Italy while enlisted. I ordered a “white” pizza (sans tomato) Michael recommended. Sophie Mae is topped with applewood-smoked bacon, red onion jam made in-house, fresh mozzarella, and romano cheese. You can’t go wrong with pizza that includes bacon!
I look forward to a return trip to try Margherita pizza and the popular roasted cauliflower highly recommended by a server.
